Small business marketing suffers from the same scattered approach frequently.

Its not a matter of effort. Sometimes its a matter of too much effort that isn’t coordinated.

This problem has two root causes: an insufficient clarity about who your ideal clients are and the outcomes you provide and a structured marketing and sales plan/process.

As I’ve mentioned before, many small businesses are started by people with a few extraordinary talents who lack “business” skills.

This isn’t a put down, its recognition that business is a learned skill that many entrepreneurs haven’t yet had time to master.

Marketing and sales is one of these critical business skills that doesn’t necessarily have to be mastered, but it must be understood and done well.

To market effectively, you must understand your offering, your ideal customers, and what problems you solve for them. If you don’t yet have these answers, your marketing won’t be effective or predictable.

Once you’ve begun effectively marketing and bringing prospects to your business, you need to have a sales process which works on turning those prospects into customers.

Sales and marketing need to be done in a coordinated fashion and planned. The plan should have goals and define how you are going to measure success. Your budget should also be incorporated along with timelines for expecting results.

These coordinated components help you approach sales and marketing rationally and prevents you from jumping from marketing effort to marketing effort and wasting your time and money.
