Social media confuses businesses.  What good is it?  What should we use it for?  How much should we budget?  This lack of understanding is probably a driving factor behind the recent study showing that 85% of CEOs don’t trust their CMOs.  In other words, the people in charge of businesses (owners or otherwise) distrust the marketing that they are doing.

The infographic below shows one area for a business to use social media marketing that solves another traditional business problem – what are our customers thinking?  This is one more tangible activity that can be done with social media that a creative business can take advantage of and it’s inexpensive if not free!

Don’t be left behind and become less competitive because you can’t figure out social media, it’s just another part of the environment and it can be “solved” as any other.  This information will help your small business marketing regardless of whether it’s traditional, inbound marketing, digital marketing, etc.

Most interesting thing in that Infographic for me Michael was that Increased Exposure ranked as top SM benefit, increased traffic as 2, generated leads as 4 and improved search rankings as 6 !! Great blog as always.

...and as Gordon pointed out increased sales is last. But, the entire list builds towards increased sales and highlights the need for a solid reporting system that can build an ROI picture for social media marketing.

Am I correct in saying that according to the Infographic, Social Media does not improve your sales hugely. Have to say that I am working on my Social Media campaigns and would agree that it does not give me added sales in the way that a lot of 'gurus' proclaim. Yes it gets the messages out but actual sales ... well I will monitor over the next six months.

I think this reflects the challenge that exists in creating an ROI for social media marketing, but the top items on the list all contribute to a growth in sales. So I would say that the direct sales tracking is a challenge and a measurement system that can follow a prospect from first contact will reveal a fuller picture and give a more useful value to social media in marketing.

Another good infographic - I think a lot of business owners need to understand that the most effective way to use social media is to become a social business. A social business is a business that incorporates social media into their overall business plan and uses it as a tool to effect positive change within the company - http://welbornsocialmedia.com/blog/306/turning-your-business-into-a-social-business/. If you're company learns how to use social media correctly your business can only go one way . . . UP!!!
